Lennie Niehaus - I Swing For You

This is part four of an outstanding four-volume collection from Lone Hill Jazz, which features all of the 13 sessions that West Coast alto saxophonist Lennie Niehaus recorded as a leader during his career from 1954-1957. These new editions scrupulously respect the chronological order of the distinct sessions, which were presented in a rather chaotic fashion in their day. This CD includes the whole of the LP I Swing For You, which has never previously been issued on CD. Includes original compositions and great versions of outstanding standards such as "Little Girl Blues", "Kiss Me and Kill Me with Love", "Don't You Know I Care ?", "I See Your Face Before Me", "Soon", and "He Ain't Got Rhythm". As a bonus there is Bill Perkins' debut album as a leader, entitled "On Stage" — one of the most celebrated LPs of the West Coast school — presented here in its entirety !

Recorded at the Music Box Theatre, Los Angeles ; February 9 & 16, 1956

Tenor Saxophonist Bill Perkins' first album as a leader was On Stage for Pacific Jazz Records. In February 1956, "Perk" or "Phineas" assembled an impressive octet and reached out to California's leading arrangers of the day for charts. What makes On Stage special is Perkins' saxophone sound, which is strong, eloquent and smoothly sculptured. As legendary arranger and tenor saxophonist Bill Holman told me yesterday, Perkins was among the finest practitioners of the Lester Young style of playing and had a relaxed personality to match. Bill Perkins' On Stage seems to be out of print in the U.S. In many ways, it's a perfect album. The horn harmonies and voicings are especially shrewd, and the blowing by all is up a notch, as if each musician knew he was being judged by the others for the quality of his ideas and skill. Most of all, you get to hear Perkins out in the open on uptempo ensemble pieces and ballads, giving you an opportunity to appreciate the qualities Bill Holman refers to above.

Thanks for great Perkins album!!!
He is amongst greaters cool tenor sax players, but totally unknown to wider audience! His wonderful "Bossa nova with strings attached" not published on CD or in blogs from 1963 to today...
