Django Reinhardt 1950 (2)-1953 & Compléments - Intégrale, vol. 19 & 20

Django Reinhardt was hardly a begrudging sort but he surely blasted a few times during his Latin sojourn in spring 1950 as things were not always to his liking. Working at the 'Open Gate', a select club for jet-setters was not particulary exciting and the gentlefolk in question were not all that attentive. But the money wasn't bad, as long as the music was not too loud and the theme tune of The Third Man was played two or three times per night. Moreover, that spring was exceptionally rainy, preventing the art-loving guuitarist from strolling around the city, paint-brushes tucked under his arm. As the drummer of the quintet, Roger Paraboschi, recalled, everything was so damp, even the premises where they sometimes recorded for the RAI, the National Italian Radio, so he had difficulty in correctly adjusting the skins on his drums...

In the last six years of Django Reinhardt's life, from his return from the American continent in 1947 until his death in 1953, the artist obviously rubbed shoulders with a number of American jazzmen, who had returned to Europe once the hostilities had ended. Among them were some old pals such as Rex Stewart, Coleman Hawkins, 'Big Boy' Goudie and Bill Coleman, not to mention Ellington and his team. He also met several big names of what was already considered as 'classical' jazz, who he had hitherto known through their discs including Roy Eldridge, Sidney Bechet and Benny Goodman. And then there were those boasting their own idiolect and who attracted the curious, one nonchalant ferreter being Django - Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Sonny Stitt, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and a few others...
