Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights

Gorgeous arrangements played by a well rehearsed and accomplished group of musicians are found in this revival of the Mulligan sextet. The addition of Jim Hall on guitar gives this group a different feel from an earlier sextet with Zoot Sims on tenor. This is perfect bachelor pad music but actually stands up to serious examination quite well. It is true that inspired improvisation is lacking but Mulligan's goal here was not that, which he could clearly provide, but rather to provide the listener with a beautiful experience that is much more than what is usually called smooth jazz. If you are a Mulligan fan you should not avoid this album, as it certainly proves his talent in what first made him famous - arranging. Three original Mulligan compositions are featured. Long time drummer Dave Bailey and bassist Bill Crow join the rhythm section with Hall, while Art Farmer on trumpet from the late 1950's quartet and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone from the original sextet all play together wonderfully.
