The Four Brothers Sound

The act of transforming the Jimmy Giuffre 3 into the Giuffre 6 (or maybe the Jimmy Giuffre 3 plus three Jimmy Giuffres) involved several hundred miles and several months, an electronic monster against the wall of Atlantic's New York studio ; a lot of work ; and — if you listen closely — a few happy crickets chirping outside of Music Barn. Most of all, it involved Jimmy Giuffre's convictions about the four  tenor sound.
"The sound is so lovely. It has been used and used, but not displayed really. You could have given me my exit papers after I hear Woody Herman's second herd play Four Brothers ; I don't suppose any composer was ever blessed with a greater performance than I was on that recording. But for this album, I wanted the listener to bathe in the sound. That's why  we didn't augment the group with a rhythm section — you can hear the sound really layed out."
Martin Williams, Co-editor, The Jazz Review (from the booklet)
