Tony Scott Plays Gypsy

This rare LP features the underrated clarinetist Tony Scott and a particularly strong quartet (which includes guitarist Mundell Lowe, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Pete LaRoca) performing nine selections from the play Gypsy ; surprisingly "Let Me Entertain You" is missing. The Jule Styne score contains quite a few viable vehicles for jazz improvising and Tony Scott is heard in fine form on such numbers as "I Had a Dream," "Some People," "You'll Never Get Away from Me" and "Everything's Coming up Roses." But this worthy album will be a difficult one to locate.

Merci Père Noël. Love Scott (and Lowe bien sur), but curious about La Roca here, as he's oft a maelstrom with the sticks.

PS: Enjoying your videos on the main page.

I had no problems. Try to use the 7z program to unzip the 7z file. may also be that the fact that I use ubuntu linux, is why I had no problems...

LOL, I used the exact same program that you suggest: 7-Zip, but it still doesn't work. I'll try another download - maybe the file got corrupted during the download for the people who are having problems?

I have never heard this album before.

I am privileged to have heard the great Tony Scott in person two years before he recorded it. In addition I am very familiar with Jule Styne's music, having seen the show both on stage and numerous times on the screen and listening to the original cast and soundtrack recordings many times.

As an ardent fan of both Scott and Gypsy, I was wondering how he would tackle a score that is not especially suitable for jazz improvisation. Boy, did I get a surprise! He acquitted himself extremely well by recording a rip-roaring version that is both immediately identifiable as being the Great Scott and also absolutely faithful to Styne's music.

I'd be hesitant to recommend this to one doesn't like Scott or the musical Gypsy but to all others I'd say don't miss this remarkable album!

Thank you, Melanchthon for giving me the opportunity to acquire this gem.
