Eddie Higgins - Great Trio Sessions

Eddie Higgins’ delicate tone and conception were often compared to those of Bill Evans, one of the most influential and successful jazz pianists. Higgins mostly played bop and mainstream jazz music throughout his career. This set presents Higgins’ earliest trio sessions in their entirety. They comprise all of the music originally issued on the albums The Eddie Higgins Trio (Replica 1009), Eddie Higgins (Vee Jay VJLP-3017), and Soulero (Atlantic LP-SD1446), plus all known extra titles and alternative takes from the sessions. Four tracks in a quintet format that complete the Vee-Jay sessions have been added as a bonus. After the trio sessions reissued here, Higgins would record another date in this format and with the same personnel as his previous albums on July 18, 1966, with Richard Evans on bass, and Marshall Thompson on drums. it produced just three tunes, “Call Me”, “Norvegian Wood”, and “What Can I Do ?”, none of which was ever issued. The results of this date, made for Atlantic, are considered lost. Higgins’ following trio album was recorded for the Tower label in January of 1967, and issued as Music From Chifly-Chitfy-Bang-Bang. After that, he wouldn’t record another trio LP until Dream Dancing, made in 1978.
