Geoff Simkins & Dave Cliff Play The Music of Tadd Dameron

The timeless quality of Tadd Dameron’s music is best exemplified by the love and care which has been lavished on it since his passing. The late Philly Joe Jones kept it alive with his band Dameronia in the Eighties then, following Jones’s death, trumpeter Don Sickler and pianist John Oddo carried on the task. In Norway arranger/composer Per Husby has also  declared his lasting dedication to Tadd’s music with his own specially assembled twelve-piece orchestra. In Britain there has been no shortage of interest in Dameron’s works and the Cliff-Simkins Quintet has built up an impressive library. Dave Cliff and Geoff Simkins have worked together as a quartet since tre late 80’s and their first recording for CD release was  made ir 1994 — released by Spotlite in June the following year. This excellent production, Sipping At Bells (Spotlite SPJ CD-553), finds Cliff & Simkins — sometimes playing duets — the quartet comprising the addition of Simon Woolf on bass and  drummer Mark Taylor. For musical inspiration the programme includes tunes by Wes Montgomery, George Shearing, Sal Mosca, Lester Young and Miles Davis. For this second Spotlite  release the quartet becomes a quintet with the addition of pianist Roy Hilton.
