Benno Moiseiwitsch In Recital

Before the fortunate discovery in 1994 of these three concerts not one solo recital by the pianist Was known to survive. As familiar as we are with his many recordings, one hears in these performances an entirely different approach, far more spontaneous and expressive. Here are the tempi Moiseiwitsch preferred, freed from the constraints imposed by a disc’s four and a half minute time-limit per side. Moiseiwitsch made studio recordings in 1961 under extremely stressful conditions in a stifling hall afflicted by the tropical summer heat (all windows were shut to banish traffic noise). While they are correct, the excitement he displayed in front of listeners is absent. Without the existence of these tape recordings Moiseiwitsch’s true artistry would have remained only in the memories of a few musicians and critics. His inclusion of otherwise unrecorded works such as the Symphonic Etudes of Schumann and Chopin’s Third Sonata are further revelations. The finale of the Sonata omits the introductory chords ! The critic Harold Schonberg did not recall Moiseiwitsch’s doing so, insisting that he must have been away that evening : “I wouldn't have missed it !” Pearl will release the remaining selections from these recitals in the future. A forgotten essay by the pianist follows which outlines how ideas shape his playing and how his decision to cut the opening bars developed : essential advice for future pianists who are reluctant to look beyond Urtext scores.
