Al Haig & Jimmy Raney - Strings Attached

Pianist Al Haig, a veteran of the bebop era, plays pretty modern on this quartet date which is co-led by guitarist Jimmy Raney. With backing by bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Frank Gant, Haig and Raney interpret two bop standards and such later material as Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" and Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance." Haig and Raney inspire each other to stretch out, including on an 11-minute version of "'Round Midnight." Thought-provoking music well worth hearing several times.

Thanks for the Al Haig. He seems to one of the overlooked players. A unique guy who came up along side Bud Powell and had his own style which is beautiful. Wallington is like this too as is Dodo Marmarosa. Of course every one who came in a little after Bud like int the early 50's and onward were all influenced by Powell. But it is nice to hear someone with his own take on things.

Wow, thank you for this, Mel! I had no idea either of these guys recorded in the '70s. My dad is in touch with Al Haig's wife and although she probably has this, you never know.
