Heinrich Neuhaus Plays Scriabin

After teaching in Tiflis and Kiev, Heinrich Neuhaus, a pupil of the great Godowsky, became famous as a professor for 40 years (until his death in 1964), at the Moscow Conservatory, where among his pupils were Richter and Gilels. He himself had a reputation as an interpreter of Scriabin (who had also been a professor at the Conservatory), and indeed had marked his Moscow debut by playing all ten of Scriabin's sonatas.
Much of the present disc is made up of early Chopinesque miniatures by Scriabin (a dozen of them less than two minutes in duration), which do not offer Neuhaus much scope, though one can admire his fleetness in the tiny Op. 13 n° 2, his lyricism in n° 3 of the same set and his fluent right-hand sixths in n° 5 ; and there is charming fantasy in the first of the Op. 32 Poemes. It comes as a shock, therefore, to find an untidy Op. 13 n° 4 and some glaring faults (including a disastrous B natural instead of B-Sharp) in the well-known 1894 pieces for left hand. The recording of these, incidentally, suffers from a rhythmic flapping noise, as do the two Op. 11 Preludes, in which there is much distortion in loud passages. Of the two major works here, the passionate B minor Fantasie shows Neuhaus at his best, with a total command of its complex textures (it is also, along with the two late 'mystic' Opp. 59 and 63 pieces, by far the most satisfactorily recorded).
