Joe Diorio - We Will Meet Again

Master guitarist Diorio plays solo on 14 cuts, but most of them use overdubbing. It's an electric amplified guitar sound, one that holds shimmering light and crystalline phrases as the key to its life. Diorio is a patient improviser, letting ringing chords and held notes speak volumes of love and regret. He wrote six of these pieces, and the others are well-known standards that he has somehow re-invented. On evergreens like "On Green Dolphin Street," "All the Things You Are," and "Summertime," Diorio sets up single pristine melodic lines with deft chord selections. "Yesterdays" has the guitarist most atypically frantic in the bridge and coda, "Lover Man" is dutifully wistful, the Bill Evans classic "We Will Meet Again" is languid, and Jobim's "How Insensitive" is quite the opposite in its light bossa refrains. Diorio's originals have vastly different qualities. "Kong Song" swings the best in a Monk-ish fashion ; the near raga "India" is clearly overdubbed, hopeful, and wide open; and "The Tip of the Iceberg" is foreboding with ascending and descending scales as warning signals. "Chetadanada" is spacey, "Hymn to the Holy Mother" is new agey, and "Poem" is loaded with fat chords and resounding blue hues. The adagio from Rodrigo's "Concerto De Aranjuez" is also much more bluesy and highly improvised after the theme. There's no doubt as to Diorio's acumen and genius. That it is underdocumented is criminal, but RAM is doing a fine job of bolstering his discography. This is a prime example.
