Rosalyn Tureck Plays Bach

Before there was Glenn Gould, there was Rosalyn Tureck. Indeed, it is difficult to conceive of the phenomenon of Gould playing Bach at the piano without the musically intelligent and technically dexterous performances of the pioneering Tureck. This 1953 recording of The Well-Tempered Clavier stands as her landmark achievement. Tureck's Bach is humane music making of the highest order. Nowhere in this recording does one hear technical facility for the sake of itself. Neither does one hear Romantic effusion and its frequently attendant distortion of tempo, dynamics, and articulation. Whether in the knottiest of fugal passages or in a serenely lyrical prelude, Tureck's playing is balanced, compelling, and ultimately convincing. Her adaptation of this music to the piano-a highly controversial undertaking in her day-exploits the special capabilities of the piano while respecting the sound and capabilities of the instrument(s) for which this music was originally intended. Tureck provides the listener with extensive liner notes, which offer, in addition to useful historical information, much insight into the performance philosophy behind the many decisions that constitute these most satisfying performances.

Dear Melanchthon,

liking the interpretations of Glenn Glould and Martin Stadtfeld very much I am curious about Tureck's work.
Thank you very much for that one!

not to complain but to observe that the sound is very poor. surface, distortion, brittle. remastering 'original image bit' -- whatever that is -- not a success. all other transcriptions of these I have found also poor. these were surely originally tape source for LP so why are they so bad ? recording provenance I have been unable to find but original US Decca issue, not UK Decca and nowhere near that standard. UK issue was Parlophone on 78s. no details on this DG issue as to source. actually the intrusive aural artefacts sound more like digitally attenuated 78 noise than LP surface or tape hiss. anybody know more ?
