Teddy Wilson - Chonological Classics (1936-1937)

All but the last of these 23 tracks were recorded whithin half a year only, between August 1936 and February 1937. Although this does not say anything about the quality of these musical masterpieces — then a look at the personnels of this CD definitly will : Nothing less than a "Who's who" of the best and most popular musicians of the thirties !
This third volume of all recordings made under the leadership of Teddy Wilson opens with a pair of sides from one of his least known dates. Vocalist Red Harper, whose only records these are, is not too memorable but the rhythm section including Lionel Hampton's vibes is pretty. The other little known singer presented on "Right or Wrong" and "Where the Lazy River Goes By" is Midge Williams. She later cut some lovely sides under her name with John Kirby's group. All other vocals are handled by the incomparable Billie Holiday. If you have never heard these tracks before — this is absolutely timeless music perfectly played ! Producer and critic JohnHammond remarked : "In January 1937 I started recording the Basie guys with Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday and I'll never forget the first session. The electricity between Billie, Prez, Jo, Buck and Freddie was amazing". Indeed, "He Ain't Got Rhythm" and "Thid Year's Kisses", both from rather dull Hollywood musical, are maybe Billie's best recordings of the decade and Lester Young's solos on these two are simply out of this world ! Don't miss Volume 4...
