Django Reinhardt 1947 (2) - Intégrale, vol. 14

The French liner notes accompanying this fourteenth compilation in the Complete Django Reinhardt series are considerably shorter than usual. This is irrelevant to the number of titles, as more or less the same quantity are included, but the period covers merely two and a half months — from 6 July to 15 September 1947. Wereas previous years, particulary 1944 and 1946, were poor on the disc front, 1947 witnessed the guitarist's true comeback to the studios and on the radio. Indeed, this vintage was so rich that it required a large proportion of Volume 13 (Frémeaux & Ass. FA 313), the present edition and will most probably necessitate the entire Volume 15 to come. This record undoubtedly beats that of 1937 when Charles Delaunay founded his 'Swing' label and our Gypsy participated in numerous recording sessions, either with his choice partners (Stéphane Grappelli, Michel Warlop, Philippe Brun etc.) or with transitory American soloists (Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Eddie South, Bill Coleman, Dicky Wells etc.) who had been lured to Paris by its ultimate universal exhibition. Years ending in '7' would appear gavourable in this respect : 1937 and 1947. Unfortunately, this good fate cannot be verified further as in 1927 our man was not yet a regular in the studios and by 1957 he was no longer around...
