Vladimir Horowitz - Complete Original Jacket Collection (Part. II, cd. 22-42)

This 70-disc box set includes recordings Horowitz made on the Columbia, CBS Masterworks, RCA Red Seal, and RCA Victor labels throughout his career, with each CD sleeve reproducing the original front and back album covers. The recordings span from the 1940s to his last studio recording made in 1989, and include both studio and live concert and recital recordings. Dedicated Horowitz fans will most likely already have a good number of these recordings, if not all of them ; most already have been individually issued or in other combined packages since the advent of the compact disc era. However, it could be a useful set for someone who is looking for a crash course in solo piano repertoire. Horowitz had his strengths and weaknesses, just like any other pianist, but his tastes were board enough to encompass all eras of classical music, from the Baroque to the post-Romantic. In the case of the Baroque music — Scarlatti, Bach, and Handel — even though these are not period-instrument performances and some may say the interpretations are not at all historically informed, Horowitz nonetheless applied his usual innate sense of musicality and expert technique. Highlights include Horowitz's own showstopping Carmen (on discs 10, 44, and 60b) and "Star-Spangled Banner" (disc 37) arrangements.
