Vladimir Horowitz Plays Scriabin

The survey of Scriabin's piano compositions encompasses the composer's early (Chopinesque), middle and late (mystic) periods. Horowitz was a lifelong champion of Scriabin. When he was eleven years old, he played for him in Kiev, only a few months before the composer's death. Scriabin was impressed and offered one bit of advice to Horowitz's parents - that they offer their son an artistic and cultural environment in which to grow beyond mere pianism. Written in 1904, during Scriabin's middle period, the "Feuillet d'Album" ("Album Leaf"), Op. 45 n° 1 is a good example of the musical miniature, a form in which Scriabin excelled. It is an engaging little piece, unabashedly romantic and refreshingly naive.
The set of Etudes Op. 8 was composed in 1894 and represents some of the best music from Scriabin's early period. It illustrates the great hold that Chopin exercised over the young Russian pianist. One also notices a variety of moods, from te playful but brilliant "Etude in thirds" (Op. 8 n° 10) to the lento portion of Op. 8 n° 8, alove song written for Scriabin's beloved Natalya Serekina. An 1894 entry in one of his notebooks shows him in an optimistic and triumphant mood : "Powerful is he ! Mightly is he ! Who feels defeat and overcome it !"...

Luckily for me, my mother was a huge Horowitz fan but maybe not Scriabin, as this was not in her collection. Being a huge Scriabin fan, I thank you profusely for posting this!
