Martial Solal - Complete Vogue Recordings, vol. 2

This compact disc is the second of a series of the complete recordings of the pianist Martial Solal for the Swing label from 1853 to 1958 (excluding tracks recorded under the pseudonym Jo Jaguar).
Very interesting and rare are the 12 quartet tracks with the excellent player, the Belgian "Fats" Sadi Lallemand, who had left his homeland four years earlier to settle and play in Paris. The arrangements are very meticulous, particulary in the introductions, interludes and codas (Time on My Hands) and their cohesion, which goes almost as far as connivance, is certainly due to the fact that Solal and Sadi performed regulary together at the Tabou. It would be astonishing if one didn't think of the MJQ when lisening to them. We should also stress what a remarkable accompanist Solal could be (behind the vibraphone, particulary during the performance of "Love Walked In")...
Philippe Baudoin, from the booklet.

OK if he started recording in 1853, he probably knew Liszt and Chopin personally, which is cool by me. Or, he's an immortal vampire, which is not cool.
