Sviatoslav Richter in Prague (Liszt & Ravel)

When the definitive edition of the Twelve Transcendental Studies appeared in 1851, it formed, according to CLaude Rostand, "the first stae of the embryo from which would come, after other works for piano, the fireworks of programme music of which Lszt would be one of the heroes." Humphrey Searle (in Liszt and His Music), recalls that this final edition was the result of a quarter-century's work. Liszt, as CLaudio Arrau noted, wrote "several versions of his most important works. He experimented and worked ceaselessly to obtain the solution which he considered totally finished. It is thus this one which he had in mind and which he finally achieved, and the one we must fully respect." The early version (1826) was introduced as "Studies in 48 Exercices in All the Major and Minor Keyes." In 1837, Liszt annouced the edition of 24 Grandes Etudes but only twelve of them were ultimately completed.
